Believe it or not, I'm more of a fan of Spider-Man in passing. I love Spider-Man, but after Spectacular Spider-Man got cancelled and those iffy Amazing Spider-Man films came out, I started to lose interest. Then Sony struck up a deal with Marvel to have them produce the next Spider-Man film, and I was kind of intrigued. So, a friend and I saw it last night. What did I think of it? Eh, it was actually pretty good. Not amazing or perfect, but a good film all around.

So, the film focuses on Peter Parker after the events of Civil War. Peter is all excited, hoping he'll become the next Avenger and be this world-saving superhero. Of course, Peter's constant super-hero-ing is putting a damper on his social life. He's neglecting his studies, the girl of his dream he just kind of ignores, and he's somehow caused the school-bully Flash to devolve into a hipster. No seriously, Flash is now this hipster lover of "dank memes", and it's really freaking weird. Flash isn't even really a bully in this version, just kind of a jerk.

Anyways, what I liked about this film was that it's kind of the opposite of Spider-Man 2. Instead of Peter losing his powers and giving up on being Spider-Man, he wants to ditch his civilian life and give up on being Peter Parker. Peter is this brilliant genius kid who has all these aspirations and amazing powers, yet he wants to throw away his real-life to be this awesome hero. I think anyone can relate to this, having some kind of amazing skill or ability and thinking they can make it big with that skill alone. Only to realize that things take time and never pan out the way they seem. It's weird that Spider-Man would be teaching this lesson though, since it seems irresponsible of Peter.

My big gripe with the movie is the lack of Peter's origin. We get hints of it, but Uncle Ben is never mentioned and they just kind of glance over how he got his powers. While I'm glad they ditched retelling the origin for the third time, it still kind of sucks that Peter is acting like a goofball nice guy just a few months after his uncle died. And already several people are hitting on Aunt May, despite the fact that she's a recent widow. It's actually kind of f**ked up. Then again, who wouldn't hit on Marissa Tomei no matter the circumstances? MREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOW!

Back on track, this was a fun film. Good action scenes, a fantastic villain, a good moral that isn't shoved in your face, and some well-placed cameos. I think the biggest problem with this film is Spider-Man himself. More often than not, Spidey is underpowered. He has to be bailed out of almost every situation, and even when he's not he's somehow causing the problem in the first case. Spidey doesn't even beat the main bad, he wins on a technicality. This guy curbstops Peter in all 4 of their encounters, yet Peter wins because of Deus Ex Machina. To me, that victory celebration at the end for Peter did not feel earned. I get that Peter is young and inexperienced and they were going for "realism", but I thought it got lame after a while. His victories rarely felt earned, as if the writers didn't really know how to make him seem comptent.

That's not to say Spidey didn't do some amazing things in this film, because he did! However, this film retreads a lot of old ground by just remaking scenes from the comics or previous films. Seriously, watch Spider-Man 1 and 2 before seeing this film and you're going to notice a fair bit of similarities. The film also borrows a lot from the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. In fact, it felt like I was watching a live-action version of the show. That's not a bad thing, cuz that was such an amazing show. :)

In short, I liked it. It's one of the better Spider-Man films, and had a fair bit of epic and intense scenes. It's just that the first half was far too jokey, certain things weren't developed enough, and they ruined Shocker. No seriously, Shocker is terrible in this film. They reduced him to henchman status! Come on, Shocker can beat Spider-Man in 1-on-1 sometimes. BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Okay, Shocker rant over. :D If you couldn't tell, Shocker is my favorite Spidey villain. Anyways, despite my minor criticisms, I'm going to give this film 8 :iconrobertdayson:s out of 10. Yes, from now one everyone is just gonna be a review score. I'm just picking from a hat at this point. XD

BTW, new story tomorrow.

The new Spiderman movies suck, they lack the creativity of the original source. (Not saying this one is) Trying too much to be hip and cool by forgetting much of the origin story. Granted yeah, the origin story of Spiderman was of the comics with the Spectacular Spiderman's way of it, but it didn't have the better story of the originals like Mary Jane or Venom or anything else. I liked they included Carnage finally, but the new Spidey love interest isn't good. Granted seeing that it shares alot of the cartoon Spectacular Spiderman sounds interesting because that was good.
